FT-450

Today I got my FT-450 here in the shack. It's working and the RF power adjusted for 5 watts. Now I'll have to wait until the new antenna arrive. Till then I let the rig be. I still have to do a lot of things, and have a busy weekend. We'll have to put up a Christmas tree. I'll have to support my son for his soccer game tomorrow afternoon. But what a nice radio, I keep on looking at it and study the manual (107 pages). This weekend a Sardinia QRP contest. SARDINIA, IS0. Members of the Sardinia QRP Club will be QRV as IQ0QP from the Capo Sant' Elia Lighthouse on December 12 and 13. Activity will be on 80 to 20 meters using CW, SSB and digital modes. QSL direct.

Have a nice weekend, 73 Paul

  1. The 450 looks fantastic in your shack. Thanks for the photo. BTW, do you have any RF feedback problems with it set to 5W?

Hope the soccer game goes well.

Thanks for telling us about the Sardinia contest - I will keep my ears pricked up for the callsign as I like to catch the islands.

    Good weekend. 73 Adam

  2. Hello Adam, I start Monday again with the 25 meter of coax RG213. I hope the antenna will come next week. It has to come from Germany. My neighbor will help me to set up the pole and chemical anchor for the bolts. I had no RF feedback problems. Bye for now, Paul

73, Bas

  4. Congratulations on the new radio, Paul. I have to say I don't like the look of the FT-450 but as long as it works well. It's a pity you have to buy the 100W radio in order to run it at 5W. Once you could buy 10W versions of most of the JA products.

The contest that would be of most interest to me over the weekend would be the 10m ARRL contest, which runs for 48 hours. However if 10m is as dead as it has been lately it will probably be of no interest at all. We'll see.

  5. I agree with the g4ilo about buying a 100 watt rig in order to get thr five ot ten desired watts output. It's having a heavy duty power supply that makes QRO tempting. Wasted energy comes from the PS, not the rig. A seven amp supply won't have you going above 20 watts. Permanently setting it at ten watts will reinforce that power level maintenance.

Actually I think the 450 looks pretty good.

The TS-2000 is another story. Much less pleasing design in my opinion.

I'm not crazy about the front speaker of the IC-718 either. That space could have contained a non-menu direct control or two.

Enjoy the new rig AND antenna.

73 Paul

  7. Hello Julian,
I agree with you about the looks of the FT-450. The VFO knob is small and low on the set. And the black display. That's why I was looking for Icom. But because of the good reviews about the receiver (DSP) etc. I will certainly work sometimes with more power if needed. ;-) 30 - 40 watts for PSK. But I do like QRP more because of the challenge. 73 Paul

  8. Hello Dick,
I do have power supplies with 40 A. So if needed I can push up the power to 100 watts. With the new antenna I will mainly go for 10 watts. Maybe with PSK31 sometimes 30 or 40 watts. The challenge is still QRP of course. At first, I it was no love at first sight with the FT-450. I don't like the dark display, the VFO knob is small but I like the technical features of the set. And a nice price, however that's why I bought this radio. Life is a matter of compromises. Now the radio is in the shack I do like it. The feel of the knobs is good. And the menu is similar like the FT817. It's not difficult to understand. 73 Paul

  9. I agree about compromises Paul :-)
You do get used to the knob, it is not so bad. I used an FT-1000 (borrowed from the club), before I got the FT-450. Sure, I would have liked a FT-2000 or FT-950, but I needed the best I could get on my limited budget. Like you, I also looked at what ICOM and the others offered.

  10. Hello Andre, I must admit that the VFO knob turns very smoothly. The longer I look at the rig, the more I like it. I never have the opportunity to work with the FT-1000 or FT2000, it's far beyond my budget. ;-) Only when I win the lottery. 73 Paul
